Why Choose An Air Source Heat Pump?

  • Lower carbon heating – Big CO₂ cuts compared to gas/oil especially when paired with today’s renewable energy tariffs.

  • Stable running costs – With an efficiency (SCOP) of 3-4 means far more heat per unit of electricity according to the Energy Saving Trust.

  • Future-proof – Installing a heat pump aligns with Scotland’s net-zero goals and ongoing support schemes.

  • Quiet operation – Many outdoor units are ~50–60 dB(A) sound power (similar to a dishwasher), with some being even quieter such as the quiet marked Worcester Bosch 5800i unit. Site layout and modern controls keeping real-world sound unobtrusive.

What is an air source heat pump?

An air source heat pump extracts heat from the outside air, transferring it to water which is pumped into your radiators, all using electricity, delivering 2–4 kWh of heat for every 1 kWh of electricity (often called COP/SCOP 2–4).

Modern systems typically cost around £11,000 installed (before grants), with final pricing depending on house size, insulation and whether your existing radiators need upgrading which is likely.

Our design-first process (what you get)

  1. Home survey & heat-loss calculationsroom-by-room to size the heat pump and emitters correctly (radiators/UFH), targeting lower flow temperatures for a higher SCOP. GOV.UK

  2. System design to MCS principles – unit selections, controls and weather compensation in line with MCS-031/MCS-020 standards and best practices.

  3. Transparent quote – including any radiator, pipework or cylinder upgrades needed for comfort and efficiency.

  4. Quality installation & commissioning – tidy pipework, balancing, control setup, friendly and easy to understand homeowner handover on completion.

  5. Aftercare – servicing and remote support; with your permission we can access your systems performance data to keep your system optimised without the need for a site visit.

Heat Pump Questions

The short answer is YES!

  • Properly designed systems work efficiently well below freezing – with field evidence and guidance showing operation even around –15 °C. Good performance depends on correct sizing, flow temperatures and correctly sized heat emitters (radiators/underfloor).

  • Heat Pump technology was primarily developed in Scandinavia, where the winter months are harsh. Therefore, heat pump systems can most definitely work well during British winters. The key factor to their success is the design and specification process, which ensures the system can produce enough energy for the property’s requirements.

  • Heat Pump systems work very similarly to refrigerators, except in reverse. Air Source Heat Pumps can extract heat from the air even when temperatures are as low as -15 degrees centigrade.

Modern units are designed to be quiet; typical sound power is in the ~50–60 dB(A) range however, layout matters more than raw numbers. We position the unit and choose the model to meet permitted-development noise criteria.

Customers ask us whether a traditional boiler is any better than an air source heat pump?

They both provide a source of heat for your home or business however, here are the advantages of having a heat pump installed over a conventional boiler:

  • Long life span and heating system warranty
  • Strong heat output
  • Higher energy efficiency
  • Lower carbon emissions
  • Renewable heat incentive scheme available
  • Fast installation process
  • No concern over fluctuating wholesale gas prices

Not always.

  • Many homes only need some emitter upgrades so the system can run at lower flow temperatures (which boosts SCOP and comfort). We confirm this after heat-loss calculations and a survey.

Yes

  • With good design and, if needed, targeted insulation and radiator sizing. Many heritage homes run heat pumps successfully after a design-led approach.

Often no

  • Most heat pump installations fall within permitted development, provided siting and noise rules are met. Listed buildings, conservation areas or multiple outdoor units may need consent – ask us and we’ll check for you.
